I'll side with Cobra on part of this issue.  The OP posted: " How about a clickable day/night toggle that can be added to the instrument in the regular map view? "

Since he said "can be added" it implies, at least to me, that each user would have the choice to add, or not, this day/night toggle, presumably through the "Customize Instruments..." feature.

As for the automatic setting of day or night.  I would think it should be something we could add, or not, on an individual basis.  Mostly I want this feature because it's very distracting to be flying at night, have my iFly get a power interruption, shut down, then restart in the very bright daylight setting.  Since it's already been discussed, and rejected, to have the iFly restart in the last day/night mode that existed when it shut down, having an automatic setting based on time of day would be (IMO) a desirable feature.

As for the originally requested Instrument 'toggle"  I would be in favor of this.  Being able to push one button while attempting to preserve my night vision (as opposed to 2 more button pushes) would be better.

Geez.

Do some of you guys not know what a "widget" is? Or how the customized instrumentation in iFly works?

As has been pointed out, I'm looking for it to be an OPTIONAL instrument, just like all the other instruments. If you want it you, add it. You don't add it if you don't want it.

It's kind of startling to think that some of you guys actually pilot aircraft...frown

Don't be a newbie ass. I didn't notice that you suggested it be optional. It would not be an instrument since an instrument gives you a readout of something. It would be a button you can add. Some of the optional instruments also have a button function built-in.

Hey, man, watch your language.  Have we had OldPilot return after a hiatus?

Launch iFly, and click the "Inst Group" button.  It will offer you a menu where you can "Select Instrument Layout".  Click the "Customize" button, and then click "Add Instrument".  Not all of these are readouts of something.  One example (which I previously provided) is the "EFIS Toggle" button.  OP's suggestion would be similar.

If you didn't notice it then why would I be the ass? Clearly, you're the only one in the thread that missed the point.

To add to my original suggestion, it would be nice if some of the hard toggles could be customized or moved around. I find myself hitting the zoom in and out buttons inadvertently from time to time and I don't really need those since you can pinch to zoom in and out.
