Hi A'll -  (1)  You do know about "ruberbanding" the course line, right?
              (2)  My VFR Sectionals already have the interstate highways printed on them.
              Am I missing something here?

Only that they want the magenta line to automagically match the roadbed.

Personally, I prefer my ability to fly in stright lines, rather than zig-zag around arbitrary property boundaries, bends in rivers, etc.  If I wanted to aim for the same mountain pass used by a road, I'd probably flight plan to use other aviation navaids to do it, or rubber-band the course line appropriately.  (And if I was for real following a road, I would check to make sure the road didn't go through a tunnel!)

I didn't ask for this, but evidently, at least one person wants it. If I wanted to follow roads, I would drive. I fly so I don't have to follow roads.

Last year we tried "flying" the Appalachian Trail...and actually found around 15 - 20 airports along the trail to stop for food/fuel/fun.

To each his own!

Another guy I know "flew" the Lewis and Clark Expedition...very cool!

I encourage folks to fly the PA Railroad up here in Pennsylvania...and near the town of Altoona, there is the world famous "Altoona Curve," which is a railroad engineering marvel of the 20th Century...very cool also!

Around 20+ years ago I used a product from Seattle Avionics that would provide the optimal (time-wise) route between 2 points taking into account winds and user inputted max distance betwen VORs (yes, VORs) and altitude band.  It also would select a fuel stop based on fuel burn/fuel capacity.  Pretty useful for longer trips as great circle routes can vary widely on a flat map but have very little difference in total distance.

The altitude optimizing feature of iFly is really nice.  What about a 'route optimizer' feature as well?  Pretty straight-forward to do based on dynamic programming principles.  One could input a max delta for the great circle routes then cycle through a discreet number of possibilities.

Right now, I do this manually by varying an east/west route 50-100 miles North and South and seeing the results in the altitude optimizer.

For grins, here is a picture of the Tehachapi Loop 90 NW of LAX.  It actually is more then 360 degrees and the front locomotive passes over the back of the train in a tunnel. Sorry, the picture is too big to upload.
