is it feasible to adapt iFly software on smartphones to superimpose the nav info over the phones’ camera images instead of on synthetic terrain?  That approach appears likely to replace synthetic terrain in the foreseeable future.

I disagree with the claim that that approach "appears likely".

How high is your phone/tablet mounted that it can "see" out the windshield?  Mine stays below the glare shield.  What if your device is mounted in landscape (sideways) mode so the camera is not at the top?  And what good would this do if you (intentionally or otherwise) flew into IMC?

I hate it when people poop on an idea (as I did above) just because they can't see what good it would do for them, in their aircraft, doing their type of flying. So, maybe you can expound on what you're thinking the benefit of this would be and why you assert that this is preferable to fully synthetic vision.

Cobra,

I based my speculation about augmented reality (AR) eventually surpassing (or joining as another option) 3-D synthetic terrain on recent trends where AR “appears” to be replacing virtual reality in emerging graphics products for smart phones.  Also AR is likely to benefit from phone manufacturers’ development of special chips that support AR. AR MAY also eventually require less processing power than synthetic terrain.  Of course these 2 approaches don’t have to be exclusive.  They could be joint options.

I suspect that seeing avionics info superimposed over actual images may eventually reach a point where the brain can interpret them more easily and faster than 3-D graphics images.  I also think that phone located with a view through the windscreen would keep my attention focused more outside.

I genuinely believe that the use of AR in avionics will become prevelant (MY GUESS) in ways we can currently only speculate about.  I hope the techies at iFly will be among the first to discover those uses for us.

Mount a GoPro on the nose and display that image on your tablet or iFly with navigation/gps information superimposed on top of that. When you zoom out, replace the GoPro image with database image.
