Hi Jeff:

A data logger app sounds like a good suggestion to see what the raw data is doing. (Typically, when I look at the iFly GPS altitude, it's remarkably accurate.) I'm not very geeky, but I'll noodle around on Play for an app. I haven't tried iFly's flight logs before. I'll try to noodle with that too to see if we have unusually long pinning of our displayed altitude.

Interesting discussion. It strikes me though that it is a special case of a more general issue and maybe an opportunity to differentiate the app:

To what extent can the app examine the NMEA data stream and identify errors and issues? As a differentiator, iFly could advertise a safety feature. Also, the same sort of checking could be applied to the ADS-B and AHARS data streams. Even if there is objectively only a small chance of there being real integrity issue, it may still have marketing value.

I suppose this is obvious but I just thought about it the other night after I started reading about the Statux. If iFly has Baro pressure data, then it seems it could alert if GPS alt and calcualted altitude differ by, say, 300 ft.

(Instead of having the user to set altimeter setting, I envision a first warning 1000 feet after take off that says "I'm showing your GPS altutude climbing thru 2000'. Is this correct? Y/N. If Y, it memorizes the offset. If N, then the user tells it what the altimeter is showing (to the nearest 100'.)

"If iFly has baro pressure data..."

iFly doesn't have a pressure sensor, so there's no way for it to measure baro altitude. I think I've seen that it has the Kollsman window setting (apparently that's included in the ADSB-in Wx stream), but that's not baro altitude.
