A feature I would like is for the unit to show ad-hoc holds. In my mind, it would work like this. I would touch an intersection. It would give me the option of define hold. After selecting this, It would ask for hold radial. I would then trace my finger around the intersection until the desired radial is displayed. Upon confirming this radial, the holding pattern would be displayed on the unit, sized for my current airspeed.

I like this suggestion. but I am not sure about tracing the route with my finger.

OK for a VOR hold such as:
"hold north-west of the XXX VOR on the 300 degrees radial, left turns, maintain 4000 feet"?
How about:
"maintain 4000 FEET, hold on the 300 radial from XXX VOR, standard turns, turn outbound at 15 DME, onward clearance time YYYY."

If we are going to add that much, how about guiding me from my current location into the hold (using the correct hold entry)?

""hold north-west of the XXX VOR on the 300 degrees radial, left turns, maintain 4000 feet"?"

Here is how I would see it working:

1. The pilot would touch the XXX VOR

2. The pilot would then touch the screen "NW" of the displayed VOR. A 0-360 number would be displayed. As the pilot moved their finger, the 0-360 number would change. When it said 300, the pilot would remove finger and press an enter key.

3. Left or right turn boxes could be selected.

4. The altitude would not be used.

5. An option of "show navigation from current location to pattern entry" could be offered.

6. After all entry, two boxes of execute or canel would be available.

I don't know about your second example.

Thanks for responding, Tom

Wouldn't a DME field be the missing piece for your second example? Normally, it would be set to 0. In your example, it would be set to 15.

A DME hold may be done without going to the VOR or fix, it could be, for example, between 10 and 15 DME and may use a Victor airway.

Any thoughts on holding patterns? Thanks.
