thammer,

Technically the iFly should remove any TFR's that have expired. It uses he GPS time so it will need a GPS lock. It also depends on the FAA accuracy in their digital feed.

However, there are instances where the FAA will put a closure date as "until further notice" and not use a date. In this case the iFly will leave it until an update is performed and that TFR is gone. Unfortunately sometimes there are rolling TFR and such, therefore it's always best to perform an update prior to flight time. Also, WX brief is always a best practice too. I hope this helps.

All, we just found a bug in v7 where TFRs will continue to be shown on the map long after they are expired. We are tweaking the logic in v7.5: The rule will be TFRs that have an explicit ACTIVE or EXPIRE date will be shown 24 hrs prior to ACTIVE through 24 hrs past EXPIRE. Why the 24 hours of padding? Several reasons: Sometimes the FAA uses zulu time, sometimes local - this padding will make that distinction irrelevant. Also, it's very common for a TFR to be extended. And finally, folks may want to see the TFRs on the map the day prior to travel, for planning.

Note, if you touch a TFR and pull the airspace information the exact ACTIVE & EXPIRE date/time provided by the FAA will still be shown.

Walter

Hi Walter,

You wrote, in part --

"Note, if you touch a TFR and pull the airspace information the exact ACTIVE & EXPIRE date/time provided by the FAA will still be shown."

At the risk of digressing from the issue which is SOUND like you have well in hand:

Yesterday when at about 2pm Pacific daylight time I did a TFR update I found a large TFR on the Klamath Falls sectional just south of mount Shasta. It is currently still showing on the AOPA flight planner (my iFly isn't here to see it on the iFly) as follows: "!FDC 2/4544 ZOA CA.. FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS 35 MILES NE OF REDDING CA. Pursuant TO 14 CFR Section 91.137(A)(2) To provide a safe environment for firefighting aircraft operations. Effective immediately until further notice. SFC - 9,000 MSL Aircraft flight operations prohibited within an area "

When I touched that same TFR (I'm 99.9% sure it's the same one) on the iFly it, of course didn't pull up that much detail, but it did have the 0 to 9000 feet there. Oddly, though, it said the TFR was (and I quote exactly) "Always."

Any ideas/explainations?

Alex

There are specific fields in the XML data the FAA provides which defines the date/time a TFR starts and ends. In this case they did not define a start/end date...hince their description "immediately until further notice"...and our description "Always". This TFR will be shown on the iFly until the FAA removes it from the list. When that happens, your next weather/tfr update will remove the TFR from your iFly.
