I hope someone can answer these questions:

1. Is the 740b any faster than a 740?

2. Is the 740 battery replaceable? And available? (This user is not afraid of soldering irons, etc.)

Why do I ask? Because an ancient 740 is my all-time favorite GPS navigation device. I use it every time I fly--several times every week. And it's semi-permanently installed in the instrument panel, right where it ought to be--and also drives the autopilot.

On the other hand, it needs a new battery and its processor is rather slow, especially compared to the iPad Mini 6 that I use as a supplemental backup.

So I'm thinking of buying a 740b, rather than enduring the downtime from sending the 740 to AP for repair.

You are king of the frugal. I salute you.

Now buy a new 740B. You won't be disappointed.

You're probably right.

But when the b model first came out, I asked AP's tech support if it was better than the 740 and was told that it wasn't. But they didn't offer any specifics--and I noted that the 740's display is "1300 nits"--compared to the b model's "1100." So I didn't buy. So now you see I'm looking for the specs.

Even if there is some small difference in processor performance between the 740 and 740b, I don't think it will be apparent in practice.  You will have exactly the same features between a 740 and a 740b.  Aside from the chance that a button response will take 23ms instead of 25ms or something like that, there's not going to be any apparent difference.  And it's a circa 2017 WinCE device; its performance is always going to pale in comparison to a 2021 iPad.

The screen brightness difference of 1300 nits vs 1000 nits is unlikely to be noticeable.  Your iPad Mini has a 500 nit brightness, and I bet you've generally been satisfied with it.  Nobody really complains that the 740b is too dim to be useable.

I am also under the belief that the only difference between a 740 and the 740B is the screen brightness, but cannot find information to prove that.

AP had a very reasonable flat rate (around $35 at one time) to repair the 740. I assume that they still do. You could call them and see what it would cost and how long to replace the battery. Could be a quick turnaround.

There was a discussion on this site about someone replacing the battery themselves with a larger battery. They did have to modify some of the plastic that held the battery in place, but seemed pleased with the results. AP will warn you that this is an unauthroized modification.

Another option is to get a small external 12V backup battery. AP used to sell one, but I don't believe they do so anymore. You can purchase an equivalent from other sources.

Good luck.
