I have a RAM mount as well, and it works as you say. I guess I wasn't clear enough. The material used for the suction cup on MY 740 mount is exceptionally sticky. It's like those mats you put on your dashboard and just lay the cell phone on and it never moves. That seems to be a good feature for mounting and being assured it's not coming off any time soon. But having to take it off each time I use it, it sticks a bit too tight. I took a picture of it. That pen is just pressed onto the suction cup. No glue, no tape, no tricks. I didn't time it, but even with moving it around and the pen swinging back and forth, it held for around a minute, perhaps more.

Yea, that's weird. Why would it have any sticky material on it?

As I said I've never used mine, but tonight I peeled a bit of the protective cover back from the suction cup and you're right, it's sticky as all get-out. If it won't clean off with alcohol or acitone, you might try stretching a piece of kitchen plastic wrap (cellophane?) over it permanently.

When i originally bought a 700 years ago, i had it mounted to the windscreen with the suction cup. Without exception, every time i came back to the hangar, the assembly was on the floor. And usually during a flight of any duration, it would fall. I think the new material on the suction cup is a good idea, even though i havent used it. I have panel mounted my 740 now. The idea of covering it with a protective layer is a good one, if it must be removed.
And btw, I'm an independent.

When I put the suction cup mount back in my flight bag, I put the original piece of plastic back on it, but a bit of it got peeled back. The sticky material picked up quite a bit of dirt/dust/lint/etc. All of it rinsed of nicely with a bit of water. I don't want to get rid of the sticky stuff, just tone it down a bit. If I can't do that, I'll keep using the old fashion suction cup I already had until I have occasion to mount it a bit less temporarily.
