I've read lots of incunclusive discussions about using the Stratus unit with Ifly 720 for weather info. I am in current need of adding weather to my 720 (before OSH)- does Stratus or Stratus 2 work with 720? Stratus seems to be a high quality, proven unit with foreflight, it would be great to use with our Iflys.

Thanks, Dave

Dave,

My lady friend pilot has the Stratus 2 to use with her Ipad(s). I can tell you that it is very robust and bullet proof. it was truly a plug and play (unlike the nightmare experience with Clarity). That being said, we spent time this past weekend trying to get the Ifly 720 to "talk" to the Stratus 2. Although the Ifly clearly sees the wifi signal from Stratus, apparently they do not speak the same language--in other words, we were unable to utilize the Stratus with the Ifly. It would be a great discovery if someone could break the code so that the Ifly could use the Stratus.

Back to your basic question about what device to use with Ifly for ads-b weather. I and several others on this site went the Clarity route. There are several design flaws with the Clarity so that it doesn't work reliably with Ifly. Although Walter is working on resolving the problem, there were other issues with Clarity that affects other platforms. I would not recommend Clarity due to the problems and the price. I would rely heavily on Walter's recommendation of what does work. I believe the products from Levil work well with Ifly but there seems to be new products coming out every day for this service.

Thank you for the candid assesment, that was the impression I was left with after reading through the archived discussions on ADSB units with the Ifly. To be clear, I love my Ifly 720 and all the capabilitiy it has, great unit. However this issue of finding a compatible, updated ADSB reciever to work with it has been frustrating. I see many second gen units now are wireless, battery powered, internal antenna and compact, like the Stratus and Clarity but not compatable (aparently). I'm sure the brains at Ifly will eventually figure out a great solution, but I need something now and will probably just go the Ipad / Foreflight route with Stratus, shame to have such a nice mounted GPS and have to bring more tech into the cocpit.

Thanks,

Dave

FYI,

We actually have a Stratus 2 on the way to take a look at. If Walter can get it playing nice, we'll add it to our beta ADSB Weather like the Stratus 1. Obviously, if they go changing things via updates and such, that might break the link. Stay tuned for more, we should have the unit this week and know more by next week.

I've heard good things about the Stratus 2, just have not put our hands on it yet. We've been pushing to integrate the Transciever features for the NavWorx and SkyGuardTWX Vision Pro. Transcievers are gaining popularity as people see how much more traffic you get that with a receiver only.

The ADS-B market is a hot topic and is changing very fast. I think you'll see many more new units in the near future. My advise, Buy what you need and don't worry about the new stuff coming out. Look at the mobile market, it makes ones head spin with how fast they are releasing models.

Shane,

I didn't realize you had the Stratus 1 talking to the Ifly. Kathy traded her Stratus 1 back to Sporty's for the Stratus 2. I hope you guys figure out how to make the 2 work with the Ifly. I'm an Ifly person while Kathy is an Ipad person. It would be great to have only one unit in the airplane that would talk to both systems.

Since I have the Stratus 2, what did you do to get the Stratus 1 to talk to the Ifly 720? I'll test it for you (as long as it isn't software issues which is your forte' ) I can see the Stratus 2 wifi but AHRS doesn't connect (only thing I can check on the ground). Kathy opened up her IPAD and foreflight at the same time and everything worked smoothly. Since the Stratus was somewhat of a joint venture with Sporty's / foreflight / and the hardware supplier, I suspect they will try to protect the signal from being used by others.

hurry up!!!
