I just finished the remote install of my SkyRadar L and it seems to work great via wifi with the 720! I'm apparently in a very good coverage area (mid-east Tennessee) for ADS-B. As soon as I pop up out of our valley, I nearly instantly start receiving ADS-B data. It seems to me that the METARS and Winds information is very quickly available, however, I've yet to receive a TAF! I must admit that so far, my flight tests have been short hops, probably lasting 20 minutes or less - hopefully, I'll get in a cross-country today!

I think an ADS-B ground transmitter is very close, if not co-located at KCSV, which is only 12 nm from my airstrip. There is a FAA weather station on the airport that reports TAF's. I "think" TAF's are refreshed every 10 minutes on ADS-B ... any idea why I haven't seen one reported yet?

Was it "Roseanne Rosannadanna" that used to say "Never Mind'???

Today, I flew that cross-country and as soon as the other data popped up, the TAF's were there, too! Same thing on the flight home. So, it's working perfectly!

By the way, another neat thing ... I was in-trail about a mile behind a friend's plane as we entered Chattanooga Class C airspace. I guess one of the big boys triggered the traffic as suddenly, there was my buddy's plane depicted on the 720 as traffiic 1.1nm from me and at 4150 ft! Kinda neat to follow him on the 720!

Interesting. Glad it is working for you. I have the same Skyradar-L, but haven't seen traffic at all on an Ifly 700.

I thought other aircraft have to have ADS-B out for me to see it and figured, based on other posts that TAF without a 'transmitter' would be pretty much useless. Now I am seeing from other posts that TAF is more available than I thought. Yet, not for me.

Hi Norman,

Just to be clear, I was mentioning two distinct and separate things in the posts Initially, I didn't see TAF's - Terminal Area Forecasts weather reports - but I think I simply wasn't allowing sufficient time for them to load. Now, with subsequent flights, they're always there!

The other thing was traffic - nothing to do with TAF's. As I understand it, if you're in an area where other aircraft with ADS-B out are triggering the ground transmitter, then you'll also get the traffic info with an ADS-B in box like the SkyRadar L. When I was around Chattanooga Class C, I guess the airliners were triggering the transmitters and I received traffic. The traffic is interesting, but not something one can rely on since it is rather random as to whether your receiving it or not (as I understand it?).

John,

You are correct. An ADS-B receiver will only see aircraft either being reported from the TIS-B Ground tower or aircraft with ADS-B out on either 978(GA) or 1090(Commercial). The TIS-B Ground Broadcast is only active when there is an ADS-B out plane that has trigger that Service Volume area to "wake up".

I've run numerous test now with Clarity, iLevil, SkyRadar receivers and the SkyGuardTWX transceiver. Example, I can have the iFly and a receiver connected, seeing only a few traffic targets. Once I turn on the ADS-B out (978), within about 30 seconds those other ADS-B receivers light up like a christmas tree. That is here in the DFW area.

May sure you have 7.6.7 as the software version as some of the earlier versions only showed traffic that was in alert status. That has since been disabled. We are speaking with SkyRadar to get a D2 model to test and see if anything different is going on. I believe they do use a slightly modified code from the GDL90 standard.

We highly stress that ADS-B receivers are really only recommended for Weather. If you are wanting Traffic, you really need an ADS-B out Transceiver to wake up the towers. It's my understanding that an airliner with 1090/1090ES out, won't wake up the 978 TIS-B ground tower, but I've not been able to confirm this. The towers are woke up by the 978 out.

Norman, we probably recommended the SkyRadar L-model at the time based on connectivity and ADS-B Weather. I would be supprised if anyone here would recommend a single band receiver for traffic applications.

ADS-B traffic is still very limited and not a replacement for TCAS or something like a ZAON. It is getting better, but I fly very cautiously with a ADS-B Transceiver. There is alot of confusing information out there on ADS-B traffic, I suggest looking at sites like the FAA and non receiver only companies as they are not biased.
