I bought the IFly 720 when it was first released and its my first aviation GPS. First question is about the software. I let it automatically update through Wifi but when I go to the version information screen in setup, it shows my OS is 1.0.1.9. In looking through the Forum, On March 18, there is a post with a version 1.0.1.10. Tonight I downloaded that version and followed the special instructions in the post and it worked. My version screen shows 1.0.1.10 but it appears I may have lost some features now. Specifically, I no longer have the option to select daylight savings time (It never worked anyway). The updates page for my 720 shows a version 6.something but I suspect that is a version for the IFly 700? What is the current IFly 720 software version and what is the proper way to update it?

2nd question is should I be updating all the charts even for the states I won't use? Does keeping the IFly 100% updated overload it?

3rd and final question is on upgrading through the WiFi connection. This seems to work on small files but when I go to update appoach plates or any other large data files, I get many errors showing failed download and retrying. Most times it never completes the update. I have had much better success with the USB data transfer but would much prefer the wireless upgrade if it worked right.

Thanks for the help, I am enjoying this GPS and look forward to exploring more features.

Re: Your 2nd question about whether you "should" update all charts, even those you have no intetion of using: That's simply personal preference.

It will take a lot of time to download all the charts that exist, especially the first time. (If you routinely update as soon as charts expire, you'll only deal with a subset of all charts for subsequent downloads, but you'll also be updating several times a year possibly for no useful purpose.)

Still, there's no harm in downloading all the charts. They're just data files, and they'll reside on the SD card, waiting to be accessed if needed. If not needed, they just sit there and don't bother anything. There's plenty of room on the SD card, so no worries about "overloading" the device.

My experience with the repeated errors-failures-retry problem was because a). I was not receiving a strong WiFi signal - moving into the same room as the router fixed that; AND/OR b). I had multiple WiFi networks set up and the 720 was repeatedly "hunting" for a handshake. The solution others have reported is to delete all but the specific connection you are using.
As to whether it is better to use WiFi or USB to update: If you have a broadband connection to your PC's then the 720 WiFi connection speed is much slower by comparison. Personally, I prefer using the WiFi update process for weather and TFRs, and the airport information database. When it comes to updating software, sectionals, TACs, Plates & Airport diagrams, and Low Altitude IFR charts it is considerably faster to use the USB flash drive. That's my opinion. It's still a great unit. --Ralph

Thanks, that helps alot. Back to software, is version 1.0.1.10 still the current version? Its not the same as what shows on the updates screen . I think the referenced version 6 seen on this site is not for the 720 but its not differentiated. It just seems like I lost some features when going to version 1.0.1.10 .

Ed,

I tried to update the 720 at the local library wifi spot tonight. I connected OK (per the display) and could browse the internet on the 720, but when I selected check for updates, the 720 said that my account imfo could not be downloaded and to verify the internet connection or try later. Worked OK via wifi at home a couple hrs later. Any ideas?

John
