Hello, all--

I am about to install a uAvionics AV-30 display in my 1948 Stinson. I already have my 740b in that Stinson on a mount and plugged into ship's power. If the AV-30 gets connected to the GPS it can display limited steering info and such as part of the attitude and dirction display and I want to have that function avialable.

Rather than use the USB to serial cable sold by iFly which involves multiple plug to plug connections by the time it gets connected to the AV-30, I would prefer to wire a custom USB male plug onto connection wire and have the other end of those wires directly enter the 15 pin D-Sub connector that is on the back of the AV-30.

So, my questions are --- when making up the wire harness, am I correct in thinking that I shoud connect the GPS data out to the USB pin 3 (normally has a green wire hooked to it in a standard USB cable) and ground to USB pin 4 (normally has a black wire hooked to it in a standard USB cable)?

--- is there any issues with using standard aircraft grade MilSpec wire to make this harness? I should think not but am not an electronics whiz.

--- Do I need to use shielded wire and/or a twisted pair or is plain old wire okay? If yes to the shielding should the shield be connected to ground at the 740b end or at the AV-30 end? I know enough to know that a shield should not be connected to ground at both ends but don't know enough to know which end is best in this case (if a shielded wire is even needed, I don't know that either).

Thanks to you all for any help you might have for me.

Bob,
I don't think there is a direct connect.  Some of the USB-Serial cables have a translucent connector at the serial end and you can see a logic board embedded.    Search the net for "USB-Serial connection schematic".  That might give you some ideas.   Maybe the Adventure Pilot Team has another solution.

I have successfully connected the 740b tablet to a Trio EZ-Pilot autopilot using a USB-Serial cable.
