mrindian,

Regarding the nexrad images, there could be a few different things going on here:

1) The resolution is actually the same; if you zoom out on the iFly to match the scale of the other device, the individual block sizes should look the same.

2) The nexrad data is inherently very blocky, containing only 8 levels of "reflectivity" for each 1km square. And the first 3 levels are almost always ignored as they represent haze and ground clutter. Some apps take the information from several surrounding blocks and "average" them together to create a smoother looking map. Currently the iFly depicts the nexrad data as-is, without modifying it to try and make it look prettier. (Please note, I'm not against apps that do this...in fact we may add this as an option for the iFly...but for version 1 of our nexrad images we choose not to "improve" the image at the cost of data accuracy)

3) There is a reported bug that can cause blocks of data to be dropped. This will be represented as "stripes" of missing data going through the nexrad image. It's possible you are seeing this, but at your zoom level it's tough to tell if this is the case. We're trying to determine the conditions that cause this so we can reproduce and repair, we'll get a fix out as soon as possible.

Regarding your missing TAFs and METARS - please create an update package that includes the "Weather & TFR" option, then update your iFly. This will add some files to the iFly that are otherwise missing - it should correct this problem. This is another bug we're working on correcting, but at least this one has an easy workaround. Once you perform that update, you will always be able to get metars & TAFs from your ADSB device.

I hope this helps.
Thanks!
Walter

actually looks pretty close to the same to me. You are zoomed in quite a bit more on the iFly, so the blocks are bigger...but comparing the size, location, and content of the blocks on the z

Walter and all -

I too, along with at least 15 of my best iFly friends, have a SkyRadar that I'm trying to make work. I recently exchanged my iFly with you (Ed) to get one that was proven to work with the SkyRadar. In flight, at altitude, near SFO, I'm not getting any indication of Nexrad painting of clouds even when there are obvious clouds (high cirrus, scattered cumulus and stratus) in the area. It's not cloudy, but it's not clear either. I haven't flown it around any cumulo-granite (and may not). It shows that it's connected and that it's downloaded hundreds of TAFs, METARs, winds aloft, and tens of PiReps but to date- with 3 flights done I've only received 2 PiReps. Roger your latest note about updating iFly with the latest WX download before flying, which I'll try before the next flight.

My thought is that you all have obviously tried this device and found and figured out a lot of different fixes, work-arounds and operator techniques that are important to its performance. Why don't you (iFly staff) start your own thread, starting at the beginning with the proper set-up, and going on through operating techniques and finally known errors, troubleshooting and fixing? Your own thread (just publish the developer notes to date) doesn't have to be fancy, time consuming and would prevent a lot of answering one-off questions from us and searching for what's going on by us- we can go right to your thread. Should be a lot easier that developing a "user's manual" or formal release notes. Use whatever disclaimers you need to.

Great product. I'm sure we'll eventually figure out the SkyRadar interface... I just hope I can still get a medical before it happens :-).

I have not used one but I hope it does not show clouds, I do hope it will show rain, and boomers, and other precipitation. Is the unit range limited to see

precipitation in other parts of the US that does have rain at the time?

Ed -

I've been flying professionally for 30 years... I get that NEXRAD only shows precipitation in/from clouds. They all have water, and my point is some of these should have shown up from my experience with other NEXRAD preflight images I've utilized before flying. Not a real cloudy day overhead, but some building clouds visible on every horizon. Unless I'm limited to a 15 mile horizon of NEXRAD data, I think I should have seen some targets of precip.

So, I'm trying to make it work for us. How about the rest of my comments? (by the way, your link doesn't work)
