I'm not sure I completely understand what one receives with an ADS-B receiver. Obviously, one can receive the weather. I'm interested in the aircraft traffic in the area.

Is it true, that if you have an ads-b receiver (not transmitter) and someone (airliner with the transmitter etc) has activated an ads-b signal in your area, that you will receive traffic information on your ads-b receiver for those aircraft who have mode S transponders? If so, how large are the traffic areas?

I understand that the FAA is broadasting traffic within 5nm horizontally, and within 3000 feet vertically, of an aircraft with an ADSB transceiver.
