Power plug 740

the only issue I have had with my 740 is the power plug. Every other manufacturers power plug that i have owned was a plug that sat firmly in the socket and had a ring or other device that secured the plug whereby you knew that the plug was solidly secured. Using two separate power plug cables that I have used have had interruptions of service. I solved this by adding some tiny amount of solder on the plugs that makes a tight fit.

shouldnt be that way . The plus and the socket should be designed so that the fit is solid and it also is secured by some added measure such as screw ring, screwed down plug, etc.

I'll second this. The type of power connector used are not very reliable, orlong lived. I have a 740 that it's twitchy on and an Icom A23 with the same type that went south. Something more secure and sturdy is needed. I've had many other pieces of equipment with the same type of power conenctor and 80% of them have problems.

The slide on RAM mount is a weak spot too. That needs screws or a positive locking mechanism.

I had to take the 740 apart and spread the grounding lip toward the center to get a good connection against the plug. It has worked now for over a year and a half without a power interruption. I agree it is a poor design but not much we can do now.

I've had three different IFly units with problems with the power plug. This is an area that needs to be addressed in future.

Of course, you shouldn't have to do this, but you could cut the plug off of the wire, open the device, and solder the wire to the connections. Then you would need a cigarette lighter receptical adapter if you want to plug into a wall outlet.
