My experience so far is getting worse with the L-3 ngt2000 as currently installed. Yes, this is a single frequency 978 hz UAT device. In my flight home after picking up my plane at the avionics shop (100 mi away), I did not receive any adsb weather using my Ipad mini 4.0 I prefer the ipad approach instead of using my 720 because I don't want any wires. I was able to see the lynx wifi signal on my Ipad and also loaded the lynx on the Ifly software. I filed the report to the FAA for the rebate on this flight. I received their notice that I failed 100%. Hmmmm. I was concerned. I contacted the avionics tech and reported that I wasn't receiving adsb in (weather) and failed the FAA test 100%. Yesterday, the tech drove to my field (100 miles) to troubleshoot the installation. We found a number of problems. The first thing he noticed is that the ngt2000 output was set to SKYRADAR (I guess this was pre-loaded into the ngt2000). The service rep from L-3 suggested renaming the wifi output to my N number so the tech changed that to the ngt2000 output.. After he made the change, I was not able to see the wifi signal on my Ipad nor my Ifly software. I then asked my technician to change the box configuration to Lynx (ngt2000). When he did that, I was not able to connect on my ifly software. I asked the technician to change the box output back to SKYRADAR since that configuration did seem to connect to my Ipad and my Ifly. ( just talked to a technical person from L-3 a few minutes ago and he told me that the output in the box should be set to SKYRADAR if I plan to use Ifly. This is related to pin selection)
continuing the story.....At this point I was able to see wifi on the Ipad and tuned to "Lynx" on the Ifly software...at this point everything seems connected. The ngt2000 has an led that lights up if you are not receiving adsb input. We were inside a hangar so I asked the tech why the led was not lit up because there was no way it could be receiving adsb input. The technician began troubleshooting and determined that there was a grounding problem. The ground comes from the box. He was able to jump the ground at the box and show that the led light did work (confirming the wiring was ok). After calling the factory and spending a lot of time going thru configurations, the factory concluded that there was a problem with the box. However, they said that wouldn't interfere with the adsb-out activity. My technician filed the RMA so they are going to send another box.
Since they said that this led light problem wouldn't affect the adsb-out features, I decided to go ahead and do the full fledged adsb-out test flight and proceed with the $500 rebate. My flight lasted over one hour where I conducted all the required maneuvers. I did receive any adsb weather while in flight (on the ipad with Ifly). After the flight, I filed the documents with the FAA. Within about 45 minutes after filing, I got the email that said my flight failed 100% on all the requirements. For those who aren't familiar with the required maneuvers, they include flying 360 patterns to left and right, simulated take off and descent . All maneuvers were conducted at 3000-4500 ft.
At this point I am at a loss. I spoke to the factory guy today and he suggested that there may be more problems in the box other than the led problem. I told him that I was disappointed that a unit would have a failure right out of the box.
Both the factory and my installer say they will make it right (I believe them) but this simple project has turned into a nightmare. I've got over $5000 invested in this project but it looks like I will still need to use my Stratux for adsb weather.
