I just received my NavWorx 600-EXP the other day. As I have a digital transponder (Sandia 165R), I didn't need the TransMonSPE and intend to hard-wire a serial cable between the 165R and the 600-EXP (165R pin 7 to 600-EXP pin1 and 165R pin3 to 600-EXP pin 2 plus ground and power wires to appropriate pins). My Sandia 165R is controlled via a serial cable from my MGL XTreme EFIS. I checked with Bill Moffett at NavWorx and he said it would be fine to just insert a "Y" splitter into the 165R and then plug one connector from the EFIS in one arm of the Y and the other connector and cable to the 600-EXP in the other arm of the Y.

Once everything was all wired up, I used a laptop with the UAT Console program to configure the 600-EXP. Initially, I didn't receive any WiFi signal (neither did the iFly 740), so I suspected a power issue. I checked continuity in all my cables and they seemed OK. After hooking everything back up, I finally got a strong WiFi signal. Using the UAT Console cofiguration program, I attempted to configure the 600-EXP - it never did indicate on the program this it was successfully configured, but, lo and behold, the iFly started reporting traffic and GPS position! A plane was tracked as traffic that flew directly over my hangar, so I could visually verify the traffic on the iFly screen was real!

I had to do some disconnecting and re-connecting to achieve my final installation. When I powered it back up, no WiFi signal again! I'm suspicious of my power connection. I was "borrowing" the 12v off the serial connector that also powers the transponder. Since this passes through a Y splitter, I would bet that the wire in in the splitter is no more than 28 AWG (Navwork specifies 20 AWG). So, I'm going to fabricate a new serial cable between the Y connector and the 600-EXP and run 20 AWG power and ground directly to my power panel. I'm also going to use better quality crimp sockets in the fabricated cable just to be sure, also!

I do have a few questions about the configuration:

  1. The installation manual refers to document # 240-0039-00 to configure the UAT Console with WiFi, but I can not find it to download on NavWorx website. I've put in a call to them but so far no response. Does anyone have a copy of this manual they can email me?
  2. On the "Input" tab of the UAT Console, I "assume" that I should select "EFIS Display" for the "Pressure Altitude Encoder?" Also select "EFIS Display" (which lists iFly) for "Transmitter Control Panel Control Panel Type?"
  3. And on the "Displays" tab, in the "Display Type" box, select "Traffic Alerts" (which lists iFly)? The box under that calls for "Serial Baud Rate" - what is the correct baud rate?
  4. When the iFly/NavWorx did work, I'm pretty sure that I had "NavWorx" checked on the iFly menu and not "NavWorx (static IP), but I'm not certain. Which one is correct?

If anyone has been there/done that connecting a digital transponder to the 600-EXP, I'd love any answers or input they could provide. Also, if anyone has a copy of 240-0039-00, please let me know!

One area NavWorx has not done well with is customer communication. Updates take a long time to get on the website, and there is no forum. If you e-mail Bill and copy BethanyBunin@navworx.com you should get a response.

I never got my call-back, but I sent an email over the weekend and Bill promptly replied Monday a.m. He sent me a copy of # 240-0039-00. It's not completed, but its got the basics covered. Further details can be found in the UAT Console Configuration manual for the certified version. Other than configuring via WiFi rather than a cable, it's all pretty similar. Now I'm waiting on a few components to fabricate a new cable between the Sandia 165R and the 600-EXP. Hopefully, once that's accomplished, I'll be good to go!

Well ... long story short - I DO need a TransMonSPE! Although the "Y" splitter works for splitting the RS232 signals, it introduces a length of 28 AWG wire between the original harness and the Sandia 165R. Unfortunately, the +12v power and ground wires are in that same harness! I contacted Sandia and they recommend 20 AWG at a minimum - the 28 AWG would act as a fuse and potentially short out before the breaker could trip!

So, the simplest (and most expensive) solution is to just revert to the TransMonSPE. This will supply the data to the NavWorx box and allow use of the original transponder harness. Simplest is best ... it just costs more! Ha!

Hi John:

Glad to hear you found your problem.

I don't know anything about what a TransMonSPE is, but as an EE, I do know that you meant to say that the 28 gauge wire would "open" (not "short out") when acting as a fuse. (A common mistake in usage.)
