I spent a good part of a day and a half trying to figure out how to update the IFly 700 GPS from my Droid X. I don’t know if there was something about my phone settings that caused these problems or if they would be the same for everyone. In any case I wrote the steps down so I wouldn’t forget them. I thought they might be useful to others if they were having problems.

1. First make sure you do NOT have your Droid connected to the IFly GPS

2. Now turn on the GPS. I don’t know why, but every time I started the GPS with the Droid plugged in, it would not recognize the USB connection. So turn on the GPS with the USB cable unplugged

3. I could not get the Update file to download to my Droid X using the standard built-in Droid browser. No matter what I did (Wifi, 3G, full strength signal) the update file would NOT download to my Droid. I tried a number of other files from other web sites, no problem. However the update Zip file would not download, either directly, or by using the Save File command (long press on the Update Zip file).

4. So I downloaded the "Opera Mini Browser" (free) from the Droid Market Place. Note that I had a hiccup with the install of the Opera browser and had to pull the battery from the Droid to re-set it. After that, Opera seemed to work ok (though it's WAY faster than the standard browser which takes some gettng used to). I then navigated to the Update window and created the TFR/Metar Zip file. I “tapped” the Zip file (NOT “long pressed”) and a small window opens with “SD Card” in it. I selected “Save” and low and behold the darn file began downloading! Click “Dismiss” at the end of the download.

5. Next, I plugged the Droid into the USB port on the GPS and waited for the small USB symbol to appear at the top of the Droid window. When it appears, drag the window bar down and tap on the “USB connection”. Now select “USB Mass Storage” and “OK”.

6. Now, on the GPS select Menu / Check for update file and then “OK”. Wait a few moments and the file should download.

7. Note that, just like using a Flash Drive, the Update file will automatically be deleted from the Droid SD card once the download is complete.

8. Lastly, pull down the USB bar at the top of the Droid and tap on "USB connection". Select "PC Mode" - this is so the SD card will be recognizable to the Droid again (at least I think this is what it does). If you don't, you won't be able to view the files on your SD card from your file manager.

Hope this helps someone!

Gary

Thanks Gary. I tried this today with my original Droid, and found the same things you describe. Couldn't download the update file with the built-in Android browser, but worked fine with Opera. I can see myself using this direct approach sometime in the future. Thanks again. Roger.

Which Droid do you consider the origional Droid? I have an HTC Incredible and couldn't get it to work like this. I did get the Opera browser and you are right about the speed. I really like it compared to the origional browser. But I don't have the USB options that you mentioned. Ifly did not recognize it as a storage device when I plugged it in.

I should have said, the original 'Motorola' Droid.

Let me add that when I hooked it up the first time, the phone did recognize it was plugged in, and I could drag down the top menu to choose the USB mode, but subsequently I tried it again and it didn't recognize it the second time. I had to unplug, then turn off the IFly, and turn it back on before it would recognize the attachment the second time.
