Has anyone figured out how to do this. It can be direct, through a laptop or whatever. I use to have a powerful WiFi signal at my previous airport so I could update the weather and TRFs on the ramp in the plane. My new bigger fancier airport has no such thing. However, I do have an excellent cell signal on my smartphone.

I have found a way to supposedly "tether" my Galaxy S3 cellphone using PdaNet and then I could use BlueTooth or a USB cable to a laptop. I guess I could use the SD update procees to do the update on the laptop.

Has anybody come up with a better plan?... something more direct that would generate a WiFi signal dirctly from the phone.

If you're using an Android phone, then depending on your OS version, provider, and plan, you may have built-in Wi-fi tethering available. The feature is usually called "mobile hotspot", and on my phone (a Verizon Galaxy S4), it's under the main settings > Connections tab > More Networks.

If that option isn't available or doesn't seem to work, then you could try FoxFi, which is the app that PDANet has evolved into. It supports Bluetooth, USB, and Wi-Fi Hotspot tethering options. (I have had some stability issues with FoxFi, where the link would randomly drop for no apparent reason, but others report that it works flawlessly...YMMV.)
