Those of you using in flight weather (ADSB or Satellite) need to read the following:

http://www.maxtrescott.com/max_trescott_on_general_a/2012/06/ntsb-alertin-cockpit-nexrad-weather-age-misleading-and-killing-pilots.html

It is interesting that the Weather Age displayed does not really reflect the age of the date - only the age since it was downloaded. A very important point to understand. This isn't really new information, but it is something that we shouldn't forget.

That really was an interesting link. I had thought the NEXRAD weather was about 5 minutes old but apparently, that's optimistic.

On the other hand, I used NEXRAD on my iFly720 connected to a SkyRadar D2 this weekend to avoid pop up thunderstorms. I was flying the final leg of a Pilot n Paws mission and the storms were pretty scattered. For the most part visibility was good enough to avoid any cells. The NEXRAD just told me generally where to look (and Sunday the storms were moving really slow - about 5 mph) and something about how strong the cell was. On the final leg there was a suspicious area dead ahead maybe 20-30 miles and NEXRAD showed me it was a whole lot bigger than it looked. Deviating to avoid it was easy and I'm not sure when I'd have initiated that turn to home (I was avoiding some airspace) if I didn't have NEXRAD.

My conclusion is pretty much dead on what the author of that article said - use onboard NEXRAD to guide you around weather, not to try and thread you through thunderstorms. About the only oddity I noticed was we were in rain on all three legs of the trip and only once did the NEXRAD show rain within 20 miles of us. I suppose that could be accounted for in the delay between the radar scan and uploading the data but I was wondering if all the rain was showing up on radar.
