Sounds good - let's try it & see how it works.
If it needs more tweaking, I just "discovered" the Auto-Track Plane setting for the map. (Which I've never used. Always been disabled, so the map always slides ownship to show 2/3 ahead?) There are options there involving time that I don't understand. But if I'm guessing right, it appears that an option could be added as a variation, such that the map starts centered on airport and then, after a certain distance from Departure airport, the map centers on ownship.
[This is from the perspective of someone who almost always uses VFR or IFR map in North Up mode.]
Think of it as the transition to cruise climb after leaving the Traffic Pattern. So if you're doing T'n'G's, the map doesn't jump around and stays centered on the airport. (Would help keeping sight of inbound Traffic, since targets wouldn't be shifting with each turn in the pattern.) Same when you're doing two 90's on a downwind departure. Map doesn't shift until your out of the Pattern and on course. (Say 3.5 miles away?)
Kinda like how I'm guessing most of us use Plates. I don't want the IAP constantly moving around on approach. I center the Plate and see where I am relative to the airport. [Again, North Up.]
