Is Internet Needed

I currently use iFly GPS on an iPad and was wondering if internet is needed in flight.

No, internet is not needed in flight.

If the internet happens to be available because your iPad has a cellular-data connection, or if your iPad is connected to an internet-providing device (e.g. your phone is in hotspot mode), then it will use the internet. But it's not needed.

If you have an ADS-B In unit, then iFly will connect to that via WiFi. But that isn't "internet" per se.

I just want to add that you don't need internet at all if you download chart data to your device, ADSB in will get you all the other data necessary.

But if you're looking for an iPad, get a WiFi + Cellular. You don't need cell service despite what the sales guy at at&t says, just need the capability.

I have a cellular-equipped ipad. What information will be received over the internet? And what information will NOT be received if cellular is disabled?
