I think the problem comes in when you make changes on one device (in the air) that don't automatically get made on the other three. I may not know what I'm taking about because I only use one iPad with iFly plus a Garmin G300.

I've never used four, but I routinely use two.  If all the devices are tied into the same wifi network in the cockpit (like from a Stratux or similar), then they can be set to sync flight plan changes.  I use this feature every time I fly.  It should work with four devices as well as it works with two.

Hi Tim,

I'm curious how you are using 4 devices in the airplane at once ... Since I don't have a GPS navigator, I was thinking that I would have different pages up with different info, such as:

  • Dedicated approach plate
  • Dedicated EFIS with highway in the sky
  • Enroute chart
  • Weather for route and destination

Your G300 already does that for you, but your iPad gives you one or two more screens of situational awareness.  But even if I only have a couple of devices open, I might want to have one or two backups available in the headset bag with current Charts and my Instrument Groups.

I think the problem comes in when you make changes on one device (in the air) that don't automatically get made on the other three ... I would make changes to the flight plan in one unit then use the built-in utility to share that flight plan to the other (up to 3) siblings.

Hi Jeff,

... swap devices on your plan ... one time per month

Thanks for that very significant detail.  If that's the case then I would fall back to one of my plan B's which could be:

  1. Do what-if planning for different routes, times, etc. on the PC with a free ware, then hand-load the final version to one iFlyGPS device and share to the others
  2. Carry the laptop in the airplane as my backup unit
  3. Nevermind having all four devices in the air

As Cobra mentioned, you can plan the route on your Windows computer at home, and using your home network you can then share the route to any or all of your devices before you leave the house.  If one of the desired devices is left in the plane, the route can be shared to it once you get to the airport using a wifi connection, cellular hotspot, or ADS-B device such as Stratux.  No need to use a 3rd party app and then manually transfer to iFly, unless you have an app that you just really prefer for preflight planning.  I usually plan the flight on one device and then share the route with the other once I'm in the plane and everything is connected to the Stratux.  When iFly (hopefully soon) gets their Avidyne interface released, I'll be able to push the plan (and any en-route changes) into the panel mounted IFD440, too.

I would recommend trying to figure a strategy where you need only a total of 4 devices. With the multi-platform subscription you would be covered.

I have iFly GPS loaded on: Surface Pro 4 (Windows 10), iPad Mini 4, iPhone 6S Plus, and my wife's Nexus 7 (Android). I use the Surface Pro 4 for flight planning and armchair flying. I use the iPad for actual flight navigation with the iPhone in the flight bag as backup. The Nexus 7 is just for helping out as a beta tester.

If you could get by with a computer at home and 3 devices in the airplane, I think you would find that a very good situation.
