Hello AP crew,

I know that I have asked this on the forum previously but I couldn't find the original post. What is the outlook for the SkyGuard TWX transceiver unit being fully accepted by the FAA for ADS-B out requirements? I would enjoy purchasing the unit and having it available to be used in another aircraft should I decide to upgrade. My concern is that if I purchase the unit and begin to use it that on January 1, 2019 it will turn into a pumpkin and I will have to buy another ADS-B unit to install. I would like to hear AP's stance on the SkyGuard and whether it would be best to go with a mounted unit. Thanks.

Sam Washington

I have a portable SkyGuard unit. I have no idea if it will ever get certified or not. However, I would want a 2020 compliant, panel mounted unit if I owned an airplane.

Those questions are probably better directed toward the manufacturers of the SkyGuardTWX product. AP is not involved in the development or potential certification of the SkyGuardTWX and so cannot really answer those questions.

Hey Old Pilot,

That's why I am asking the question now because if the likelihood of the SkyGuard being approved by the FAA is very low, then I will move to a mounted solution. It seems that we should be able to mount the unit somewhere in the cockpit and make it secure but I haven't heard any suggestions on doing so. I fly a Piper Cherokee 140 and I have plenty of space in the baggage compartment where I could mount it and install an external antenna for it.

Hi Cobra,

I placed a call to Don at SkyGuard also and we are playing phone tag today. I hope to hear back from him later.
