Mount

Can the suction mount that comes with 720 be modified so that the suction cup is removed and replaced with a single attach point, that would be fixed to the panel? You guys need to come up with some type of doohickey for this. (not a gizmo panel mount deal). 2 issues with suction cup that suck. 1, it takes up too much real estate. 2, it is not safe when you rotating into ifr and the thing "unsucks" and falls in you lap, uh, while it showing your charts. The panel permanent mount receiving part only needs to be something about a nickel size half moon slot that lays flat and it's orientation is upwards. Then the existing suction cup mount (cup removed) has the matching half moon part that simply slips down in the receiving side. It will never fall down, unless you flying upside down. A little flip latch could be manufactured to lock it all into place. To keep the current mount arm is a must for it allows the 720 to be oriented where ever one needs it to be. Another requirement needed would be another adjustment ball on the arm nearest the panel mount area to further allow best screen orientation. Please consider this upgrade. Greg

+1 on Jim's recommendation. drmax, the only feasible thing for a manufacturer to do is to offer a very limited number (like: one) of least-common-denominator mounts. And a suction cup mount fills the bill. A permanent anchor to the panel does not fit the needs of all customers and tooling for injection molded (or worse, cast metal) pieces is very expensive. The manufacturer's limited resources are much better utilized towards product improvements and new products.

I suggest that you look at the RAM "A" series mounting hardware. These have a 9/16" ball and are overall much less bulky than the more common "B"hardware. A little creativity with some tools should let you come up with something that meets your needs. There is also a lot of creative GoPro hardware out there; maybe one of those gadgets could be adapted.

Just curious: Why would you be needing to look at a chart when "rotating into" IFR, whatever that means? These things are great toys and having in-cockpit WX is very nice, but I have never been in a situation where having the toy drop into my lap was anything more than a minor inconvenience. Never will be, either.

Why not build, or have someone build one for you? Quickly looking at mine, it appears that a mount could be made with a piece of metal bent into a square "U". Take the suction cup assembly off by unscrewing the wing nut and pulling the bolt out, then put the bolt through the holes you drilled in the square "U" shaped mount, and attach it to the panel.

Sure I could fab one, and will. This post is my opinion, and of course anyone here has theres. Not going to be involved in a pissing match, over a suggestion. I also know what ram mounts are. I am throwing out ideas. Not demanding someone change a design, so relax. "Rotate into ifr, or whatever that means" remark, was either being a smarty, or a dummy, or combo. Thanks to the couple of you that appear to be brain stormers/inventors. Take care, dm.
