All,

Just messing around with the IFY720 today and just happened to notice that the published pattern altitudes for all the airports in the airport information field read "not specified". My question, Why would the published pattern altitude not be specified? Is this a data error?

Frank,

I looked at a range of airports and seem most controlled have a Pattern Altitude, whereas most of the uncontrolled airports show unspecified. I also looked several up on AirNav and they do not have the Pattern Altitude as well. I think the iFly database is correct as received from the FAA. There are just not that many specified altitudes.

Hi Shane,
I am also using Foreflight, they show Pattern Altitudes for every Airport except Private Airports.
I wonder what Data Base ForeFlight is using.

Hi Ed - Wait. Did I miss something? I thought standard pattern altitude for piston A/C was 800 ft. AGL. Is it now 1000 ft.? I guess I need to update my FAR/AIM hand book. And I'm a FAA ground instructor! Boy it's hard to catch every thing that the FAA throws at us. - Jim Williams

Hi John,

You are correct. I also use Foreflight on my phone as a back up, and when you pull up airport info, it does list the pattern altitude. Not that adding 1000' to the airport elevation is that difficult, it does eliminate any potential for mathematical errors by former knuckle dragging ex Army paratroopers like myself. Planning is still the key prior to any flight to a unfamiliar area. Personally, I don't like using the iphone for anything but playing music when it comes to flying.

Respectfully

FS
