There is no legal requirement to have an updated obstacle database. Mountains and terrain don't change much. Towers do, but the big giant ones don't change much, and the little 200-400' AGL guys don't worry me so much.

A one-shot obstacle update costs less than a subscription, and is only required when you decide you want one.

As I said the database costs are something I cannot justify in my situation . $395 or $595 may not seem like alot to you but we are in a different situation probably . My $140 monthly tie down + $2.50 landing fees ,$100 yearly badge fee $75.00 yearly car access fee for Paved tie down precludes me from taking the next big step .

My pal 70 miles from me pays $60 total car access , paved ,free id badge and zero landing fees. He has a garmin 430 and an ILS/LOC and 3 vor approaches into his airport :)

I'm not passing judgment on whether these prices are high, low, affordable, or otherwise, All I did was add some data to the discussion.

The prices are what they are. Everybody who flies makes decisions about what they can and can't afford. But you gotta know the prices if you want to make an informed decision.
