I know this might be a difficult question. I just want to know how accurate are the portable gps in the plane. I have the 700 for 2 years. I don't have an onboard gps or DME.

I don't have a technical answer for you but I have run my iFly in conjunction with a Garmin 530W for about 2 years now. The iFly has been spot on with the Garmin in every aspect I can compare. Distance, heading, track, GS, ETA, ETE, etc are virtually identical.

There is no doubt in my mind whatsoever that the portable iFly is equal in performance to the certified equipment I have onboard. Of course, results may vary from aircraft to aircraft (ie. GPS signal strength, interference)

Hope this helps.

There also is the question of FFA approval to use an iFly for measuring distance in a DME approach.

No portable, or non-IFR certified panel-mount GPS can be used LEGALLY for DME equivalence on an IFR approach --- but, the only time it will matter is if you are wanting to take an IFR check-ride with the FAA or DPE. As an instructor, I have had the issue with my students and have queried the DPEs in the area.

And you cannot legally file and fly an IFR flight plan without a certified panel mount. The iFly has always matched my panel mount precisely. And I use it a lot but.....the panel mount is the one that I use for primary navigation with the iFly being for "situational awareness" should anyone ask.
