I selected one that is free and two that require subscriptions but offer free trials...generally..the glare on the ipad was impossible...though I am still waiting for a screen guard that is supposed to dramatically reduce that..sure..we will see. Though I have only touched on the aps I am not impressed...at first glance they are difficult to navigate and there are some issues to say the least.
Flew yesterday with both the iFly and the ipad. Finally put the ipad away and used the iFly. I will have to do a considerable amount of practice to become as proficient with the ipad which btw lost lost gps constantly.
I think virtually anyone who has the chance to use an iFly will reach the same conclusion. The iFly remains a more functional pilots aid in almost every way. As far as the GPS signal, the iPad (regardless of which one) MUST use an external antenna to be of any use. That being said, the Dual Bluetooth works great.
I enjoy having the mini as an extra resource but I look at it as a kneeboard enhancement. Foreflight has some quirks but it is a very good planning / info resource. There are many others that may do the same but as you say, they require more practice to become proficient. The iFly feels and behaves more like a flight instrument rather than a flight resource. That's what makes it so good!
