WAAS

Has anybody heard when WAAS will be adapted? The 720 would be a perfect replacement for my 496, but it needs to be able to input WAAS GPS position into the Trig 31 transponder so the ADSb out will function.

Jerry,

We continue to have an internal debate about the pros and cons of enabling WAAS. The "cons" are: It would require an external antenna, (external to the airplane would be best, which we don't currently offer). Without such an antenna if you enable WAAS even a traditional lock may take longer to aquire.

The "pros" of using WAAS on our GPS sort of give me the shivers. Using a non certified GPS in the ADSB system probably doesn't intruduce a big safety concern...but I'm sure the FAA wouldn't smile on that. But, using any handheld GPS to perform a percision approach is simply not a good idea, and I really don't want folks to use an iFly for that purpose. It's a great source of additional information to help navigate an approach, but that's it. It shouldn't be used to shoot a zero visibility percision approach, which is when you need WAAS resolution.

Beyond doing a percision approach, the difference between 30' or 5' of error is simply not relevant so the "cons" win and we haven't enabled it.

So, let the debate resume: Please provide thoughts, feedback, recomendations and we'll again consider enabling WAAS on our iFlys.

Thanks!
Walter

Thanks for the response.

i whole heatedly agree with you on the handheld GPS being used for approaches. I also understand the 2020 mandate and knew that after that date a certified GPS will be required. In the interim any WAAS GPS is able to input valid data into xpndrs. I currently have a 496 doing the chore and was hoping to upgrade to your unit.

i will certainly keep an eye on the 720 for possible upgrades.

Jerry

Jerry, I didn't realize the FAA was allowing non certified devices to provide the GPS data. That may push me over the edge. I'll keep you posted.

Another pro waas guy here . The various gps programs coming about between Ipad's and androids is making the choice in aviation GPS very competitive . The gyroscopes in these units are making attitude gyros ( not approved )available so the more AP has to offer the better . As a vested customer since the early days I want AP to thrive . The more AP has to bring to the table the better for the company and end user .

If someone attempts to fly actual approaches using an Ifly I think they are going to do it with waas or not . I would like to have Waas so when I fly IFR using steam gauges the additional accuracy will improve situational awareness and heaven forbid a major electrical or vacuum issue having waas in an emergency couldnt hurt . I must admit I have an external antenna on the top of my aircraft so for me waas would be a bonus .

Just my 2 cents ..
