Hi fellow aviators,

I currently use a Garmin 295 with an external antenna (mounted on top of my plane). I'm thinking of upgrading to the ifly 720. ..two questions...

1.) Does the ifly really hold a solid, uninterrupted signal without an external antenna as advertised?

2.) Will the external antenna I use with the Garmin 295 work with the ifly 720?

Thanks to anybody who ventures an answer!

Re: #1, will it track GPS satellites without an external antenna? I think the only honest answer is, "Your mileage may vary." You'll just have to try it out and see.

I and many other users (the vast majority I would suspect, based on the relatively small number of problems posted here) have never had any issue whatsoever with the GPS tracking. I routinely use my iFly in my living room and study during pre-flight planning, and I've also used it in many hotel rooms and friends' and relatives' houses, and even indoors my unit typically retains a very solid lock. In my plane, I've never had a hint of a problem.

That said, some people have reported some problems (usually intermittent, not constant). Whether that's because they got a bum unit, or something in their plane interferes with GPS reception, or some other reason, I dunno.

I am using the same antenna that I used with my Garmin 295, (and Magellan SkyBlazer before that) with my '700 and it works great. My '700 works fine with its internal antenna, just seems to lock quicker with the external one. Since I already had the external antenna, I used it; I don't think I would add it otherwise.

I use the $25 optional external antenna and it locks very quickly, has never lost lock even for a moment and even works inside a metal hanger with the door closed. It's easy to mount, only about an inch square, and easy to run the small coax to the unit. I figure it's cheap insurance well worth the peace of mind.

I routinely use my 700 in both an Archer and a 172, usually below 5,000 agl in Minnesota and Wisconsin without an antenna. I don't remember ever having a lock problem with it in over a year of use. I have it mounted on the yoke.
