Cobra:
I am not IFR. The way I use the sky coverage is to siimply insure that there is not 100% cloud coverage at my destination. I would rely on this feature at night either.
For example, if I am flying along at 6,500 feet and encounter a cloud layer at 3,000. The layer is 100% and it is indicated on the sky coverage of ForeFlight. I need to get across the deck 60 miles or so and I want to make sure the cloud deck is gone or it is broken in the area where I need to land. Knowing the sky coverage near my desitination lets me know if I am OK on top, or need to go under it. I use this feature all the time.
In your example with the color dots may help, but as you know it can be VFR but 100% cloud coverage.
