Likely I'm missing something in the settings -

Just connected a Stratux to my 740 via WiFi. At first glance from the ground I had traffic showing. In the air at about 800' all the traffic surrounding the airport began to show up.

Not seeing any weather though. I live close to the Gulf of Mexico. Noticed the usual summer anvil buildups over the water, zoomed the display out and flew up and down the coast for a bit and what should have shown as some serious weather over the Gulf wasn't displayed.

Please comment on what I'm obviously missing in the display setup to display weather.

740 and Stratux is terrific for the traffic! Now if I can get the WX to display I'll be a happy camper until I fork out the $$$ for a full in/out ADS-B system.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Carl --- just a thought ---- on the Map Mode page, you obviously have "Traffic" checked ---- Do you have "Nexrad" checked ---- I just flew this morning, off Clearwater Beach, and could see some activity to my North and South.

You receive weather and most traffic from a ground station. Usually, you have to be in the air at about 1000 feet before you will receive information from a ground station. The traffic you are seeing on the ground might be traffic broadcasting with ADS-B out directly to your Stratux. Also, please remember that without ADS-B out, you will not see most of the traffic except when flying in close proximity to another airplane that has ADS-B out. The ground stations do not broadcast traffic information except to aircraft with ADS-B out. The Stratux or any other ADS-B receiver, by itself, is not a reliable device for seeing traffic.

Also, iFly only displays the Regional NEXRAD from ADS-B, whereas if you're connected to and get a weather update from the internet, it'll pull the CONUS NEXRAD. When pulled from ADS-B it doesn't necessarily pull within a radius of you with you in the center, but rather a box, usually with you along an edge. I've flown within 30 miles of a storm I can visually see but doesn't show up on NEXRAD (outside the "box"), while showing me echo's for 100 miles in other directions. Hopefully they'll have an option for CONUS NEXRAD soon.

Thanks for your comments. I'm aware of the limitations of a simple receive only like the Stratus but it's been an interesting and inexpensive experiment that's convinced me of the value of a an in/out system.

Ronsim, thanks for the pointer on the weather. ZPH is as you know a bit of a hike from N Tampa/Lutz so I won't get a chance to check that until Saturday. I'll post an update then.

Thanks Gentlemen.
