Demo Dude,

I think you have FIS-B and TIS-B confused. TIS-B is the traffic information broadcast. FIS-B is the nexrad, metars, ect

Will be interesting to see how Don respondes to this. I just got my SkyGuard back from him last Wednesday after he flashed it to sn SIL = 0.

I agree with Demo the FAA is saying if you have a non certified unit you will no longer turn on the traffic puck, and therefore will not receive the TIS-B info you used to unless someone else turns it on for you.

Feel little sorry for Don as he is like any other business man trying to make a buck. I think the FAA led him and many astray that they would cooperate in helping these small companies meet the TSO standards. At first WAAS not needed, but now it is. At first yeah you can broadcast a SIL = 0 up till 2020 to give you time to meet your TSO but opps we have decided to change the rules on you.

While I am working toward an upgrade that will make me compliant I am really hoping Don is able to fight his way through all this and get his certification.

Don at SkyGuard has posted a detailed explanation of how the recent FAA decision to stop TIS-B transmission to non-certified ADS-B units will affect the TWX units. The great news is that Don has devised a plan to retrofit/upgrade existing portable TWX units so they will be able to continue to receive TIS-B after the new FAA tactic goes into effect. Units will have to be returned to SkyGuard to have the work accomplished for a nominal fee - they will notify users in batches sequentially when and where to send the units. You can read all about it on the SkyGuard forum. Hats off to Don for figuring out a way to keep our portable units from becoming bricks after January 2016. ====Ralph
