Before I had my iFly I had a Lowrance 2000c. Amoungst it's available screens was an HSI which I'm very excited to now have on the iFly with the fantastic new 7.5.18 release

A really useful feature that the Lowrance had for the HSI was the 'OBS Hold'. What this did was as follows:

  • Pick a waypoint as a destination e.g. VOR like 'FZT';
  • Activate 'OBS Hold' mode;
  • You could then use left/right arrows to rotate the 'course' to whatever radial you wanted to/from the current waypoint;
  • The course-line shown would then reflect the chosen 'OBS radial to/from' the waypoint;

So lets say ATC said to fly the 320 radial from FZT, you selected FZT as your waypoint, activated OBS Hold mode, selected the 320 from radialwith the left/right arrows. And then you could use the HSI to get yourself onto that radial and fly it until told otherwise.

Here are a couple of screen shots:

First a normal example of the HSI flying direct to a Waypoint (i.e. normal mode direct to just like we now have, no radial selection made):

Notice in the above the little white triangle on the course inicator points in the same direction as the course arrow (indicating a course to the waypoint).

Now using the OBS mode (in this case it happens to be flying From rather than to), but:

Notice the little white Traingle on the course arrow line now points in the opposite direction from the Course indicator, i.e. it incates that the course is from the waypoint..

The NMEA output worked fine and sent the autopilot outbound on the radial too!

Anyway, now that we have an HSI......I figure no harm in asking.

P.S. I kinda liked the CDI instrument box too (basically a graphical alternative to the current Cross Track Error).

Great information. We do have the OBS on the Wishlist. We even had some internal discussion about it for V7.5, but is just didn't make it in time. This may be an added feature in a future Software Update. I agree, have the ability to fly a Radial is a very handy tool and having right on the HSI just make sense. I've noted you post and noted the Wishlist as well. Stay tuned and thanks for your great information and feedback.

It would also be nice to add DME to this feature. As you know all IFR charts use DME markers at various intersections, etc, etc.

So, it would be great to know the distance from the VOR you are tracking.

My assumption was (and this is how it worked on the Lowrance), we'd pick a waypoint (VOR typically) as a destiantion (so as such the distance to waypoint instrument would be the DME), but then the OBS would allow selection of the radial i.e. changing the Course and Course line indicatedon the HSI (we fly the couse). On the example screenshot above notice that although the course is 320 and the course pointer points to that, the bearing and distance instruments still reflected the waypoint.

Could you also add a bearing pointer to the waypoint/station?
