Before I switched to IFLY GPS I was using a free navigation app that had the ability to detect the glide ratio.

Simple when you think that it only has to take the GPS ground speed and compare it to the descent rate. These factors are readily available on our IFLY apps.

I found it very helpful in determining the best glide speed for my Avid Flyer.

In the event of an engine failure it would help to pick the optimum speed to give the longest glide no matter what the wind direction and speed.

That IS a great request, but your glide ratio at idle. vs. your glide ratio with a windmilling prop/dead engine is DRAMATICALLY different. Please don't ask me how I know.

Well, we have the Blue Predictor arrow, that updates in real time where you'll be in, say, 5 minutes at your current speed. Seems like iFly could paint a segmented polygon around ownship if you hit an Emergency button that could predict where you would reach the Surface at your current gs and descent rate. (Perhaps in 18 quadrants (N, NNE, NE, ENE, E, etc.)

I don't know how many times since I've been on the board for the last 2 years I've seen people (incl. me) ask for a feature like you describe (engine-out glide circle around the plane or some other indicator).  Amen, let's see it done.  Doesn't have to be perfect, just give us an idea in an emergency of what's potentially reachable on the map based on our altitude and glide ratio that we inputted.  Something on the map would be a GREAT supplement to the arrows and mileage and red/yellow/green indicators we have in the emergency popup box now under NRST.  I would even keep it on fulltime when flying thru hazardous areas.

But, if I understood correctly, the OP was asking for a feature to *calculate* the glide ratio for him.

This short discussion brought two questions to mind.

Would/should we be able to have the glide distance area displayed at all times so we're not playing with a GPS when we should be flying/troubleshooting?

Is the difference in glide distance/ratio mathematically predictable for each type aircraft such that the iFly could calculate/plot that more reasonable and likely area?
