Tinker,

Excellent response, and great points. I don't think I could agree with you more. I have a sectional with me as well, although it is becoming more likely that it will be outdated. However, I seem to remember reading more than one article that implies, if not outright endorses, that electronic charts are the only thing needed in a cockpit. Many airlines have gone completely paperless. I certainly don't expect that this should be anywhere near the top of the iFly list, but people being as they are and despite the very valid wisdom of keeping non-digital solutions as backup, it doesn't seem it's going to be too long before paper charts are abandonded completely.

GPS "outages" are inevitable...the whole system goes down for short periods of time every few years with solar activity, and local outages because of interference, solar or ionosphere weather, or just a fluke of bad satellite positioning, etc. Considering this, and with more and more people using digital solutions for their primary & backup, I think some safety features that make the app more useful without a lock is a good idea. IE, helping to cross-reference VORs, manually position the aircraft on the map, automatic dead-recokoning, could be useful in a pinch.

I don't object to things like that for features. You are in a features race, after all. I don't think they should be necessary for a proficient pilot, but that is an answer to a different question.

But I hope these potential features are prioritized very low. I am a cheerleader for iFly, but there are a lot of more important things that are in ForeFlight that are still not implemented in iFly. You certainly have the list.

I treat this forum like a Christmas list or a brain storming session...it's to gather and discuss ideas. Priority is a different matter entirely and we deal with that subject carefully when planning our development cycles.

Cheers,
Walter
