Earlier today I took off without realizing my iFly was not powered up. As I was cruising along at 150+ knots I powered it up, but it did not get a GPS lock until I was in the pattern some 15 minutes later. The unit was in full view of the sky the entire time. Is this to be expected?

I had a similar issue recently on a return trip from KAUS to KTKI. I was told it had to do with the recent rash of solar flares we've had and that they were interfering with GPS signals. The fact that your Garmin was working and the iFly was not is odd unless it is not as susceptible to flares as the iFly.

you probably have external anntena on garman. I believe the internal anntena of Ifly is rather weak and I use the external anntena on mine and have never lost signal.

There is no one answer as to why the iFly had trouble getting a lock. Some possible reasons are:

  • External or internal interference
  • You are in a GPS Satellite Shadow
  • The "Almanac" (a database that contains info on the GPS network of satellites) is out of date. This can happen if the GPS is turned of for a couple of weeks - a lock cannot be obtained until the database is made current (which happens automatically when the GPS is turned on)
  • If the GPS has been moved across country while powered off, or the current position is otherwise not known, it will take longer to get an initial lock as it has to consider the entire world for possible locations.
  • If trying to get an initial lock while at high speed, especially if any of the above bullets are in play, it will be especially difficult to get the initial lock as position is constantly changing.

Hope this helps,
Walter

Sorry for the late reply...

I have had this happen on at least 2 occasions.

I cut the power and then plug it back in (reboot) and it grabs the GPS as soon as it loads up the maps.

There is a 'reset gps' buried somewhere within the menus, but I can pull the plug and reinsert it faster than I can find the reset!

I was curious if anyone tried this ‘reboot’???
