The High-res winds aloft, which includes a 36 hour forecase of wind data, is only available via the Internet. This data is based on 1/2 degree resolution, and is very accurate as it's compiling data from lots of WX sources. This will automatically download anytime your app is running and your device is connected to the Internet. It's a good practice to get this done prior to a flight.
The FAA stations winds aloft reports will be updated from the ADSB system. These reports are updated every 8 hours or so, and these stations can be 100miles or more apart from each other. This can be handy if the high-res data isn't available, but there simply isn't enough accurate information to draw accurate wind barbs across the map, or to use for flight plan optimization.
