Don't worry, the 740b and the iFly GPS app you use now are not going anywhere!  We will continue to support these products alongside our all-new EFB.

It's unlikely that the 740 or the original app will get substantial new features, but they will continue to work with today's capabilities indefinitely.

Yes, thanks, I got that. It's what they have NOT said that is worrisome.

I'm not a 740/740b user, but I fully understand the angst.  It's clear that those products are being "sunsetted".

As I understand it, a major issue (maybe THE major issue) is that Microsoft has sunsetted Windows CE, which is the OS in these devices.  But clearly another issue is the lack of horsepower in what is now a quite old hardware design.

iFly users that want a dedicated device need to seriously petitition Adventure Pilot to come up with a new device that has the horsepower, and runs an OS that will be supported into the forseeable future (e.g. Android).  Then you can count on the form factor and brightness, as well as a hardware interface for NMEA output.  I think that being a vendor that has a hardware product has probably served them well and they should consider continuing that.  Hopefully it could happen, but even if it did, how long would that take before coming to fruition?  Anyway, I doubt they'll do it.  But there's no harm in asking.

IMHO I think the above posters are right -- you need to look somewhere else if you can't go with a tablet due to mount issues, brightness, or lack of native NMEA output.  But having to learn new software, and losing the ability to run backup on a phone or tablet, or having it at home on your PC/laptop to do planning -- that's a hard pill.

Hey guys! Let me step in here with some clarity:

- EFB is for iOS/android/windows. Consider this a schism from iFly GPS/7 series tablets software wise. Your existing GPS subscription will carry over to EFB and vice versa.

- Yes, lots of stuff is getting crossed off the wishlist. We're still playing with the stable version in-office right now before we start adding features like traffic alerts, weight and balance etc.

- NMEA output will be addressed at oshkosh. I cannot say anything other than that currently.

- THE 740B IS NOT GOING AWAY. Think of this in car terms - if we're Ford, we aren't doing away with Mustang, we're just adding F-150. Just a new product. Doesn't mean old ones are going away. We have pretty much perfected the software performance on the 740b and I don't anticipate there to be a 760 on the horizon for quite some time. Remember, it's only been out for about 4 years. We wouldn't even consider replacing it for at least another 2, then a year of R&D before release broadly speaking.

- The only time I've seen heat issues on my iPad is when the screen is left directly in sunlight for an extended period of time. Put an Otterbox on it and shade the screen and you'll be fine. As cobra has said, and take his word for it as I am team iOS everything, he has not had an issue with android devices.

This is a really, really exciting and big step forward for us as a company to give our clients something that isn't just capable, but beautiful as well. We are a AAA software developer and this is what we've been working on for the past couple years, and it is really going to shine.

Nobody said the 740b was going away.  But as you said, there's a schism now.  The new iFly EFB software will not run on 740b or earlier models.  Only iFly GPS will.

A major question then is: are you going to be making major feature enhancements to only EFB from now on? Will the Weight & Balance, glide ring, voice traffic, and other major enhancements that we've been waiting for so long going to be in GPS, or only in EFB?

A second major question is: is iFly definitely going to have a follow-on device to the 740b?

Good questions:

Bug fixes and data updates will still happen with GPS, but we've been hamstrung for a while with performance limitations in the 740b. It has been redlined for a while ie. ytou have synthetic vision on half the screen max on the 740b while iOS et al are far more capable devices and have new hardware released every year.

As of right now, the best answer is "probably". We've been getting a lot more users as a percentage who have mobile devices as opposed to the 7xx devices and we also want to emphasize that the 7xx users are not being abandoned. Your devices will continue to be supported and updated, but we want and need to continue to adapt our software to continue with the march of new devices from Aapl, Goog, and msft.
