Greetings All,

I flew into and out of Philadelphia, PA yesterday and did not have any traffic alerts. I am using the iLevilSW and both iPad and iFly 720. I may not have set up either correctly but prior flights (a few months ago) I used to get all kinds of traffic alerts including enroute jet traffic at high altitudes.

We had an Airbus A319 pass within a few miles of us and it did not ping them.

The AHRS works, GPS tracking but not sure if I need to select or configure my tablet and 720 since the last few software updates.

Any suggestions?

Paul

Paul,

If you are getting weather from your iLevil, then you are also getting traffic. But the iLevil SW is a single band receiver, so it will only pick up traffic that is being broadcast from the FAA ground station. So traffic from this product will always be somewhat on-or-off.

Basically, the FAA only includes some traffic in the feed. If an aircraft has an ADSB Transceiver on board, then all planes near that guy will be included in the feed. If you are also near that guy, you will see traffic.

I hope this helps,
Walter

(Paul, btw, we got your voicemail - I just tried calling you back - but went to a fax machine or modem or something. Give us another call if you still want to chat about this. -Walter)

As long as you do not have an ADSB-Out transmitter, then the answer is always going to be, "Your mileage may vary."

I had an original SkyRadar UAT receiver for 2 years. My home base is in the Houston area under the Class B shelf. Plenty of big iron flying around me, and plenty of ADSB transmitters.

But I hardly ever got a traffic blip on my iFly + SkyRadar combo.

If I flew up to Dallas, there'd be traffic blips all over the screen.

I finally got tired of the intermittent traffic performance, and bought a SkyGuard TWX transceiver. Now that I've got an ADSB-out signal, I get consistent traffic data in the Houston area, as well as everywhere else I fly.

So if you're serious about receiving ADSB traffic...you need an ADSB-out transmitter as part of your solution. Otherwise...your mileage may vary.

Just a little further clarification...the FAA ground station transmits all of the traffic that has mode C. However, you must have ADS-B in and out to receive the ground station signal unless you are flying in close vicinity to another plane with ADS-B out. In that case, you may intercept the ground station signal being sent to that plane. If you want traffic, ditch the ADS-B in device and get an ADS-B in/out device. I sold my Dual XGPS170 on Ebay and purchased a SkyGuard transceiver.

Also, if your device is a 978 frequency device, it will not pick up any of the direct air-to-air traffic from commercial aircraft that use the 1090 frequency. Again, you would need an ADS-B out device to trigger the ground station.
